ISO 45001:2018 - Enhancing Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management

ISO 45001:2018 outlines specific requirements for the establishment and operation of an Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) management system. Additionally, it provides guidance for organizations aiming to create safe and healthy workplaces, preventing work-related injuries and illnesses while proactively enhancing their OH&S performance.

This standard is relevant to organizations of any size, type, or industry that seek to implement and maintain an OH&S management system. The goal is to improve occupational health and safety, eliminate hazards, minimize risks, capitalize on opportunities, and address nonconformities associated with OH&S management system activities.

ISO 45001:2018 aligns with an organization’s OH&S policy, striving for continual improvement in OH&S performance, compliance with legal and other requirements, and the achievement of OH&S objectives.

Regardless of an organization’s size, type, or activities, ISO 45001:2018 is applicable. It considers OH&S risks under an organization’s control, accounting for factors such as the organizational context, operational environment, and the needs of workers and other stakeholders.

While ISO 45001:2018 doesn’t specify OH&S performance criteria or dictate the design of an OH&S management system, it enables organizations to systematically improve occupational health and safety management. It encourages the integration of worker wellness and wellbeing within the OH&S management system.

The standard does not address issues such as product safety, property damage, or environmental impacts, focusing solely on the risks to workers and relevant stakeholders. To claim conformity to ISO 45001:2018, organizations must fully incorporate and fulfill all its requirements within their OH&S management system, without any exclusions.
